Although many of the students are American, they know very little about that country and of course the students not from there know even less.<br /><br />We are doing a "World's Fair" in about 2 weeks and each grade is studying a country. The first graders were asked what country they would be studying, today during chapel, "America" said one child, but his neighbor clarified for him, "The USA of America!"<br /><br />As the speaker came up later on in Chapel, the question was asked, "What State is Miss Schnake from?" The students eagerly said, "America," (not really a state). "But where in America?" the teacher asked, "um, the middle," responded a child. "True, but what state is she from?" the teacher asked again. "Mexico!" was the next answer.<br /><br />So maybe geography isn't their strength! But it sure brings some humerous moments!HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-43594950803322440322010-10-11T01:18:00.000-07:002010-10-11T01:22:50.227-07:00My students are quite funny!Today in music class (Pre-1st), I asked the students how we could keep a steady beat as we sang to them (greeting / closing song). We do this everyday, so they are starting to come up with new ideas. One of the little boys showed me a motion I had never seen before. So I asked him what to call it. He declared "Shave." So we wiped our fingers across our upper lip to the beat and sang, "Shave for Fulop. . ." I was laughing inside. At the end of class the same little boy came up with this lion roaring motion, with a scowl on the face. He declared, "We can call it grump." So we sang "Grump for Fulop. . ." I had never heard these in all my years of teaching 5 year olds. These little ones truly brighten my day!HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-5278813066103529772010-10-02T02:21:00.000-07:002010-10-02T02:26:54.466-07:00Here's my story it's sad but true. . .It's about a water heater that I once knew. . .<br /><br />Three visits from the repair men - and I'm praying we have heat tonight! This all began last year when we would take showers and this terrible loud banging sound would occur. It continued this year with the hot water changing to cold water during the shower or while washing dishes. Two days ago, my roommate and I decided that we should turn on the heat (it has been getting pretty cold at night here). The hot water was now working, but when we turned the heater on the banging sound came back. The repair men came for the second time and nothing improved. So today, I've been hanging around in my living room and am praying that their hours of work will produce constant heat. I think I've now realized the importance of working equipment. It is pretty essential for a warm house. I am grateful that we realized the lack of heat before it got too cold outside. I'm hopeful for a warm house this winter!!HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-78510905349944001002010-09-11T14:42:00.001-07:002010-09-11T14:46:49.220-07:00Jars of Clay<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXguWtHGvfmbyHWiEPQ-QlgGhhNU51B8vqDW5F9LmKaMm_MtUP7OzK9JMJvcENyOjnoRdS71d2EisK-7bEpRe5FLh-xTQlli8zcGsnf8Lr7YZcfJG5PSWZaqtiQX9jj3IL2hc_mePp_WeE/s1600/IMG_7699.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515775163110486194" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXguWtHGvfmbyHWiEPQ-QlgGhhNU51B8vqDW5F9LmKaMm_MtUP7OzK9JMJvcENyOjnoRdS71d2EisK-7bEpRe5FLh-xTQlli8zcGsnf8Lr7YZcfJG5PSWZaqtiQX9jj3IL2hc_mePp_WeE/s320/IMG_7699.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw51NnXDvztyBeZWXljPGtDMZ3OwrvzPESGWWmqzgxCexQcOzvsIf617jANgQJUhqLcvgehKzNU6u4JhC_zMDn2s0a-eoWDpqjtjkZ9PHDG4lCs_HJSvCx5m84huWiNJmRXdIWNpQHgz5X/s1600/IMG_7705.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515775146567656338" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw51NnXDvztyBeZWXljPGtDMZ3OwrvzPESGWWmqzgxCexQcOzvsIf617jANgQJUhqLcvgehKzNU6u4JhC_zMDn2s0a-eoWDpqjtjkZ9PHDG4lCs_HJSvCx5m84huWiNJmRXdIWNpQHgz5X/s320/IMG_7705.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>Well, the past week has been a busy one. I'm still working on my schedule - trying not to be too busy, but still have some plans. I'll be teaching piano lessons 1 day a week and have an 8th Grade Girls Bible Study on another day of the week. The rest of the days are for hanging out, shopping and whatever else comes up.<br />Last week I was able to go to a Jars of Clay Concert in Budapest. It was only standing up, but I found some boxes by the side to sit on. Although I don't really know a lot of their songs I really enjoyed it. Especially the more acoustic songs toward the end - they were really nice! Here is a picture of the band and some of me with my friends (three 8th graders and 1 of their moms). </div></div>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-25275210570140155842010-09-01T23:29:00.000-07:002010-09-01T23:31:56.237-07:00School has begun!Yes, yesterday was the first day of school! I thought it went very well. I only had 2 art classes and 2 chapels on my schedule for the day. In 5th grade art we explored colors using food coloring and icing! The kids got to eat small cookies with colored icing when we were done with class. I think they liked it. Today, I begin my music classes.HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-12794200049988340132009-11-16T11:51:00.000-08:002009-11-16T12:26:41.086-08:00My students say the funniest things! So I thought I would tell you a bit about my students. They say the funniest things. First of all I have a student who doesn't always call me "Miss Wood." Instead she just says, "Hey Wood!" It always cracks me up.<br /><br />The other day one of my students asked if he could whisper something into my ear. Well, I explained that this isn't always polite in public. He proceeded to grab my right hand and point at my diamond ring. He asked if I had gotten it as a present (implying engagement). I said "Yes, from my grandpa" (it was my grandmother's 25th wedding anniversary ring). At this point our conversation had interested some other 1st graders, who began telling me that their mothers had the "exact same ring." It just made me laugh.<br /><br />Tonight, I went to one of my students' house. As I arrived, I'm clobbered by the 2nd grader, who stays pretty close to me all evening. Hugging me or leaning into me at the dinner table. As I was leaving she asked me how old I was. I told her to guess. Her best guess was "45"! Isn't a child's perspective always amusing in regards to age. Last week, one of my students told me I looked like a teenager! It was a compliment because she thinks that teenagers are pretty cool (she is in 4th grade). So in one week I went from being a teenager to 45! Too funny.<br /><br /><br /><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-33600054227565688422009-11-03T07:38:00.001-08:002009-11-03T08:20:19.066-08:00Slovenia Video #2<input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyOm8U0LeyPRd-shxMCzljvtZD2dw33KKCpI1YbY0wULMpxBuawoK_w-AdboDcRo2Tww-gPxg0PdUPUAV5tPw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dx7kGxN_M5erAnfxp9Z49hYTfpphmBA5QDVEc2Qlhpktj6_KQt4QwQgg6leELODs57OLYLRA0PJgvNX-QkNoA' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-23379182989279914512009-11-03T07:38:00.000-08:002009-11-03T08:11:13.566-08:00Slovenia Video<input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwTpFp062V-B5Qk2VwDy5EcEmeuKd6XJ49BvP6WEtIhfPOC_7tw1wdbmvIPdOWfU-0-hBAmZZS6sTltOnT4xA' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-38969332130039301312009-11-03T07:26:00.001-08:002009-11-03T07:38:22.357-08:00Pictures from Slovenia<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhmvNXkodC3DghPRmPOAOgs6jWxdKhf57321kpdkCr2qeqAuIsSVOp0rxytwsa4yVi8KCSzorlZPkWcBnKR3PvXsOWTA9zEgAl3tLH1CdldvuH9ntT4C_3Qp6bqdD-wLUitE9u-19JkZ7I/s1600-h/IMG_6412.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; My roommate had rented a harp from Slovenia and it needed to be returned. So we decided to make that our fall break trip and drive to Slovenia. Our friend Audrey came with as well. We borrowed a stick shift van (let me tell you, that was new for me). However, I had just house sat the week before and had driven their manual car, so was feeling a bit more practiced up. We went to the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, which is a small town with a really quaint feel to it. The people their love cafes, so there are many places to just sit and sip your coffee along the small river. We were able to stay in a flat on the 5th floor of a building that was built in the 1500 -1600's for free! This was right in the center of the town and afforded a lovely view of the castle up on the hill. My friends and I enjoyed walking around the town and just taking in the fall colors and cool air. We laughed a lot and came back very refreshed. I am included some of my favorite pictures and a few videos (explanations needed).<br />The video, "Hannah Being Agile," is taken while coming down from the castle hill. It was quite a steep path and sometimes I have a hard time keeping my balance. I had heard that if you walk diagonally it helps you not feel the sharp incline and it is less stress on your knees. It worked great for me, but my friends thought it was pretty funny!!<br />The video, "Hello descenders" - we read in our tour book that it is proper in Slovenia for the person ascending to greet the person is descending. It shows respect and honor for them since they have made it up. So we decided to create a video demonstrating this cultural moment.<br />The video, "Let's take a moment" - doesn't really need an explanation!!!<br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-49707354808362505982009-10-14T12:49:00.000-07:002009-10-14T13:53:21.542-07:00Last Friday<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmW7SFgVuPUHUoHT1FSEO9HmZ5qE2fP96Sdu64sGWZ0QdO2fYuEGwydfwfiK0wyla1AavXzmGFKlNGQONzan_N_ADJwRlNgpAypihKLpFnNskdDFNU8DlxF_WHIC7ZmwIb2bG5I7l6UA07/s1600-h/coffee+house+and+cards"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392546817387481122" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmW7SFgVuPUHUoHT1FSEO9HmZ5qE2fP96Sdu64sGWZ0QdO2fYuEGwydfwfiK0wyla1AavXzmGFKlNGQONzan_N_ADJwRlNgpAypihKLpFnNskdDFNU8DlxF_WHIC7ZmwIb2bG5I7l6UA07/s320/coffee+house+and+cards" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_3Gh4I3jCbcN4AQxS3ghgpCQ19D1nMwMkCSWH8lf-Qqyant_oe42F2RXncznpPGb0RvGOT6FvMhYbsdRDh2kdYTqxaoD2Hs1SPm9bBEXuRBJeitUQOowYxzQ8puiCQa7UVRZ99yjf3PXZ/s1600-h/junk+day"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392546808303868722" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_3Gh4I3jCbcN4AQxS3ghgpCQ19D1nMwMkCSWH8lf-Qqyant_oe42F2RXncznpPGb0RvGOT6FvMhYbsdRDh2kdYTqxaoD2Hs1SPm9bBEXuRBJeitUQOowYxzQ8puiCQa7UVRZ99yjf3PXZ/s320/junk+day" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>So here in Hungary, every so often, is what they call trash day. This is when everyone puts out everything they don't want anymore - big stuff. Like refrigeraters, chairs, couches, tvs, tables, beds, etc. It can be in good condition or bad condition. Okay, then everyone else rummages around and finds goodies for their house. As they say, "one mans junk, is another mans treasure." Well last Friday I went down town to the YWAM coffee house in Budapest. In the district where the coffee house was it was, yes you guessed, trash day. Here is a picture of my new friend Alexis, sitting on the trash. I should have grabbed this folding chair I found, but hesitated and when I came back it was gone. The other picture is of me and my friends playing cards at the coffee house. It was a really fun night. I have more pictures coming of me waiting at the bus station (at 11:50 p.m.) to go home on the last bus. Enjoy!</div></div>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-26949357938692455032009-10-01T23:47:00.000-07:002009-10-02T00:08:48.698-07:00Me and Zsuzsi<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMFe8gDc5Dsn_vf4vgIWlPq6jNm1wyuot5nBwxFHOpupyc52q4CDH8Ok-bfF4-mnQJ-qZy0NNHApZ8m4zQy2rYJJcvA-EFMMaLpsohEDLoHCbUltB8r7EPoG3VY_uazZoUNB5OmtdAr9QR/s1600-h/Picture+057.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMFe8gDc5Dsn_vf4vgIWlPq6jNm1wyuot5nBwxFHOpupyc52q4CDH8Ok-bfF4-mnQJ-qZy0NNHApZ8m4zQy2rYJJcvA-EFMMaLpsohEDLoHCbUltB8r7EPoG3VY_uazZoUNB5OmtdAr9QR/s320/Picture+057.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387892296387588658" border="0" /></a><br />This is my friends baby Zsuzsi. She is 9 months old and so much fun. She just beams and giggles. I have been able to spend some quality time with her and her parents (dear friends of mine) in the past week. You can tell in the picture we are both having a great time. Zsuzsi loves the camera and just starts smiling when it is brought out. She can give you 5 and is trying to figure out how to pucker her lips and smack them together (like a kiss). She scrunches up her face when you do it, trying to imitate. It is so fun to watch babies learn how to do things!HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-24987574042355879722009-09-28T06:30:00.000-07:002009-09-28T06:35:49.011-07:00My Roommate<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptVrCBz9v4TzgUCsfVEo-Knxktn_9Vw6Dsq5s00WNKT64Fzo1sTlGbxHJ0vIkk_D2jy2VHp-xOgFVo4mtA3dw5LQA_FICeGRx-10Xl1tAlWGOIT1I41oiR1-cFRVQiG0YhehyEg7f7cq7/s1600-h/IMG_6111.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptVrCBz9v4TzgUCsfVEo-Knxktn_9Vw6Dsq5s00WNKT64Fzo1sTlGbxHJ0vIkk_D2jy2VHp-xOgFVo4mtA3dw5LQA_FICeGRx-10Xl1tAlWGOIT1I41oiR1-cFRVQiG0YhehyEg7f7cq7/s320/IMG_6111.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5386511209902178978" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcsD-5ITLxdk5X4PMzdD1VX6BI9PKpQ3T1XG8dzpA-S2_TLnxJ_ig8XxJ3d3vDbCsdSzUUn7H-gBkWfz35wrsAORdbwuz30xG6dZbzJh0HiaN2DiYDvSEcKncX5C8otxp8KBLXJGivRday/s1600-h/IMG_6110.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcsD-5ITLxdk5X4PMzdD1VX6BI9PKpQ3T1XG8dzpA-S2_TLnxJ_ig8XxJ3d3vDbCsdSzUUn7H-gBkWfz35wrsAORdbwuz30xG6dZbzJh0HiaN2DiYDvSEcKncX5C8otxp8KBLXJGivRday/s320/IMG_6110.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5386511201319531634" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-v0jgDW1rGpnJg25AzObfiRKIEnlDtx-zJCfOVctFjLNrCoO01fPV0KF2lT1nkvfgMHBjodIZhhiHKpIR9mBFKySD7JZYSaR0jwJ3bFH7p8mBqlA6J_QOJGUZgUTGgPzGLGKJaXtEMvgL/s1600-h/IMG_6108.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-v0jgDW1rGpnJg25AzObfiRKIEnlDtx-zJCfOVctFjLNrCoO01fPV0KF2lT1nkvfgMHBjodIZhhiHKpIR9mBFKySD7JZYSaR0jwJ3bFH7p8mBqlA6J_QOJGUZgUTGgPzGLGKJaXtEMvgL/s320/IMG_6108.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5386511200309618274" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6V0Je6wj24ATXovGQJcVOVjUBVnPBaUZod3y17WWYXfNC-5eAvyhwnIYhsQo0rtoL5HmVgebGsUpBhyphenhyphenn4_oVO1wPk1BOyT5gSYRg_YSq8poLazPVefDO_sf2-fkCrUJ_DS1iJ396fweF7/s1600-h/IMG_6106.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6V0Je6wj24ATXovGQJcVOVjUBVnPBaUZod3y17WWYXfNC-5eAvyhwnIYhsQo0rtoL5HmVgebGsUpBhyphenhyphenn4_oVO1wPk1BOyT5gSYRg_YSq8poLazPVefDO_sf2-fkCrUJ_DS1iJ396fweF7/s320/IMG_6106.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5386511189505140834" border="0" /></a><br />Here are some pictures of my roommate and I having some fun. Her name is Scarlett, she is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and she's been here since last October. She is a personal assistant to one of the 1st grade students who has down syndrome. We enjoy cooking together (we even made falafal the other night), playing games, and just talking about life and how God is working in our lives. It was so much better than last week. On Thursday I spent 9 minutes of my 30 lining up at the door and entering the class. They kept talking, running, pushing and not following directions. Today it paid off. 1 time in and they were all very quiet. I was very encouraged. I was reminded why I love first graders so much. They have the energy and excitement of 5 adults!!!<br /><br />Next blog. . . My new roommate and apartment!! I had a friend who allowed me to use her car (stick of course) for the afternoon. Let's just say, I'm not the best stick driver and I've not driven much here in Hungary. Well, we used the CLUB, you know on the steering wheel and my friend Andrea held it in the back seat every time. It was pretty funny. I'm so happy that I was able to drive around and get everything I needed.<br /><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-5256101213506573102009-08-31T07:03:00.000-07:002009-08-31T07:07:43.489-07:00First Day of ClassesWell, it has been a while since I've written on here. I am going to be putting it in my planner to write to you all each week, just a bit about my life here in Hungary. Today was my first day of teaching. I had the 5th grade and 1st grade music classes. I thought they went quite well. I focused a lot on rules and procedures - the kids need to know what my standards are and how my class runs. I am really hoping to focus more on movement activities and playing the instruments more often during class time. In order to do these two things, I need the kids to understand that they have to be self-controlled or it doesn't work. I prayed for wisdom throughout my day and I felt blessed with patience and composure. I pray tomorrow goes as well as today!!!!<br /><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-52481372612191006712008-11-23T11:12:00.000-08:002008-11-23T11:18:14.191-08:00The first snow!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Q8MnjY0rKApVcWNLxMFucJqLiIXZl7ZGOCks37lpfx-CAVb_hsuf2GKpsR5ZAuNn8PEHMiHMfXPVn4QzGJG2e7d7zyVEKqzPFhegi0AW8p9m9BBSzvV8BfjGE8rDrECl_TOhciu8_Zdn/s1600-h/jumping.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; So we had Thursday and Friday off. My friend Becca and I decided about a week and a half before the weekend to go to Prague (said Praha in Hungarian) for the weekend. We were able to see some of the most famous sights. Now let me tell you that Prague is beautiful and extremely quaint and perfectly European. It has a charm that other big cities like Vienna and Budapest don't have. The main reason is that the streets and sidewalks are mostly cobblestone, the streets are narrow and the buildings talk. There are many shops lining the streets - they don't really open till around 9:00 or 10:00 am, but they stay open late. The city is quite lit up at night and certain buildings just glow. I have included some pictures of some of my favorite things. Church of our lady before Tyn - is a unique church with amazing gothic towers. At night it looked almost fake. This is the dial of the Astronomical clock found on the Old Town Hall Tower in Old Town Square. The lit up building is the Rudolfinum, a large concert hall where we were able to hear a wonderful concert of the Prague symphony orchestra. The last picture is of Charles bridge looking over towards the Prague castle. It was very crowded starting about mid morning. This bridge was full of street venders and is lined with statues. If you've never been to Prague, I recommend it highly.HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-50141236963557752032008-10-21T09:37:00.001-07:002008-10-21T09:52:23.847-07:00Orchestra Concert<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYk3jyLh4D4fKgdgMzfHL2E7JP_n03CwM9vzSdNmamgEGlXK7k2Bw-SZLWU0CfL7jre0gryX0c8QT4gHWy_MMGzplUEFi_YmGEBdqei_p77agV81FtYFrKjx10SPdj5Wxn31sjWR6ait3/s1600-h/Hungarian_State_Opera_House(PDXdj).jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYk3jyLh4D4fKgdgMzfHL2E7JP_n03CwM9vzSdNmamgEGlXK7k2Bw-SZLWU0CfL7jre0gryX0c8QT4gHWy_MMGzplUEFi_YmGEBdqei_p77agV81FtYFrKjx10SPdj5Wxn31sjWR6ait3/s320/Hungarian_State_Opera_House(PDXdj).jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259650811445353250" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKzMa5mL2Y3bnIqd0WFxu14H7dakVOYhP-X8K9Zo5jo0DbmC9ofihqQ9CduN02AxBQALNvCk3wJ71ATRIKoot4_Xel7p-xHPZothyphenhyphen4rm4LRmhPFlnSgXAnarNez_-8eHERF2BDNj9M65ig/s1600-h/img7258.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKzMa5mL2Y3bnIqd0WFxu14H7dakVOYhP-X8K9Zo5jo0DbmC9ofihqQ9CduN02AxBQALNvCk3wJ71ATRIKoot4_Xel7p-xHPZothyphenhyphen4rm4LRmhPFlnSgXAnarNez_-8eHERF2BDNj9M65ig/s320/img7258.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259650813687281042" border="0" /></a><br />So, yesterday night I went downtown and went to the Hungarian State Opera House to hear an orchestra play Tchaikovsky and Dvorak. It was simply wonderful. What was especially exciting is that my friends and I bought the 400 forint tickets = $2.20. These tickets have limited view (and I mean limited), in that you can only see about 1/4 of the orchestra and that is if you are leaning forward. Sitting back you really can't see the orchestra, but you can hear the music. Several different people caught my eye. There was the box with 3 college boys, in their shirt and ties, as if they had come out for a bit of culture but weren't use to this style. Then there was the man in the box below them whose hand barely stopped moving. It was as if he knew or had played the piano part for these songs, or had conducted them at one time many years ago. As my eyes drifted across the rows and boxes on the opposite side of the tall auditorium, I was drawn to the box with 6 Hungarian ladies in it. They were probably in their late 60's and were dressed up and truly enjoying the music. The Hungarian people love music and are very intent listeners. They sit so still and focus on the players and conductor. To show how much they love the music they applaud and applaud. They never stand, but instead they all syncronize their claps into a very slow steady clap and then get faster and faster all together. At this point they break into normal clapping again. But pretty soon, they'll all find the beat again and start clapping together. This can go on for minutes. Last night they clapped for probably 4 minutes, then the orchestra did and encore. Then the audience began clapping all over again. They truly have a love for the arts. I have added two pictures for you. The first one is the outside of the Opera House. The second one is the inside. The stage, you can't see it, is to the right. I was sitting in the top row on the far right of the picture. The reason you can't see is because you face the other side of the room, not the stage. ENJOY!!!HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-78935061419554302132008-10-04T13:22:00.000-07:002008-10-04T13:42:41.961-07:00Strange thoughtsWelcome back! School has begun and is in full swing, so it is now time to welcome you back to my weekly blog. I will be updating each week (sometimes more), just to give you a taste of my life here in Hungary and what goes on. Kind of a "Day in the Life" of Hannah. Living in another country brings about unique (at times awkward) situations. Like the other day a man on the street decided he wanted to talk to me. I had no idea what he was saying, so I smiled, told him in Hungarian that I only spoke a little. He nodded, smiled and and said something like "Oh, I understand dear, have a nice day." It made me smile a bit. Or yesterday when I called the pizza place, asked if anyone spoke English and got a solid "Nem" (no). So in my limited Hungarian I proceeded to order a szalami (pepperoni, but we call it salami) pizza and give my friends address for delivery. About 45minutes later the pizza showed up (I always feel like I've conquered the world when it works). Well, yesterday I had the strangest thought. Here in Hungary refrigerators are quite small, making the freezer even smaller. I had a roommate so I get half of a very small freezer. Now as I was growing up we had a giant deep freeze so we could stock up. Well, it has been really hard for me to stock up and freeze leftovers for later meals. So yesterday, I saw an aid for an upright freezer and I got so excited and wanted to buy it. Now I don't know about you, but I have never had an urge to buy a freezer before. I don't think I'll buy it, but it sure got me thinking about buying a smaller one or freeze things in the school freezers. I'll keep you posted if I decide to get creative.<br /><img src="file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/HANNAH%7E1/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot.jpg" alt="" /><img src="file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/HANNAH%7E1/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot-1.jpg" alt="" />HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-11297117198704039552008-06-07T11:27:00.001-07:002008-06-07T11:40:09.818-07:00Fun in my apartment!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVUQ0RWJnNXItcXq1TMRuc660ddfUtbEu7deZ8pJBsuWzGCt4rUTuhCUeptQQEnIJiH7KDAXRhqtktzHFVnNWr94p8donBj6NR8ve33At3PWpuFUr_VeY7nYOFqD6-jlWqpc-L_lAgBDSQ/s1600-h/IMG_1871.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVUQ0RWJnNXItcXq1TMRuc660ddfUtbEu7deZ8pJBsuWzGCt4rUTuhCUeptQQEnIJiH7KDAXRhqtktzHFVnNWr94p8donBj6NR8ve33At3PWpuFUr_VeY7nYOFqD6-jlWqpc-L_lAgBDSQ/s320/IMG_1871.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209209968221273762" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqhhhgRJ9prCJbI8ErTOqHybdios3e8INjVM_mGrZ722aciM5I319UnUPEFw5dJi1wGk3gVM2SDo6uXlnBpH-zpld2TZzyl5u5pVszUCLLS7kopvY5J6Hy9XrU81mdvNd7kcgfON4pct0a/s1600-h/IMG_1872.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqhhhgRJ9prCJbI8ErTOqHybdios3e8INjVM_mGrZ722aciM5I319UnUPEFw5dJi1wGk3gVM2SDo6uXlnBpH-zpld2TZzyl5u5pVszUCLLS7kopvY5J6Hy9XrU81mdvNd7kcgfON4pct0a/s320/IMG_1872.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209209972303885122" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRY8yWbNmIrGZUm7qw8451dUuGdG90K0gK3bOr-S4bSaWiIyyCdUHghI_eVU8ZM2NVa1rrpxSb0NO8PnFAgeiAElSsqnADmwmkePRtqXYZTS2h7HDqE3sBrLIiu15x_GDXDzVOSjy8NB9X/s1600-h/IMG_1875.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRY8yWbNmIrGZUm7qw8451dUuGdG90K0gK3bOr-S4bSaWiIyyCdUHghI_eVU8ZM2NVa1rrpxSb0NO8PnFAgeiAElSsqnADmwmkePRtqXYZTS2h7HDqE3sBrLIiu15x_GDXDzVOSjy8NB9X/s320/IMG_1875.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209209978857216114" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZZJBKumObQywUhcapoumT1C3qzfXA5JArAXdiVK3clmGOv0BxiIdvOhnC7kTGlxJ7xrgJr_JSvIY7euE2ysEMhiBQLDdl0yjTBgdk4TsFjkhUaQUg_9DUtJbIKvaRm3dmkqVcQD1r6eo/s1600-h/IMG_1880.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZZJBKumObQywUhcapoumT1C3qzfXA5JArAXdiVK3clmGOv0BxiIdvOhnC7kTGlxJ7xrgJr_JSvIY7euE2ysEMhiBQLDdl0yjTBgdk4TsFjkhUaQUg_9DUtJbIKvaRm3dmkqVcQD1r6eo/s320/IMG_1880.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209209986457605458" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK0rJBjKs7NgQ6S1J9XiKz4VnwdgNspIJnKnzKhBWgYh4RfoKfhJYLDYPn2RqYhBt6iIzKus_BBru07Y4ROwE8ZLxoA-K8ptgfwk4WRX5POn5xXsyLTDKqJm8fiSZrFUE5IjaO9szmok5u/s1600-h/IMG_1883.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK0rJBjKs7NgQ6S1J9XiKz4VnwdgNspIJnKnzKhBWgYh4RfoKfhJYLDYPn2RqYhBt6iIzKus_BBru07Y4ROwE8ZLxoA-K8ptgfwk4WRX5POn5xXsyLTDKqJm8fiSZrFUE5IjaO9szmok5u/s320/IMG_1883.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209209996579031234" border="0" /></a><br />This was a fun night. Rebecca (the other music teacher) and I worked hard to put all the details together. We heard great things from the families who hosted the students. I was really glad to have them come and share their music with the school community and the Diosd community. It was especially important to me because I knew about 1/3 of the students, as well as Mr. Ed, Dr. and Mrs. Cornman and Beth Naegele. It was really special to show them my life here in Hungary. On the Monday they were here, I guided the tour bus downtown Budapest and showed my friends, Matt, Joel, Nicole, Jonathan, and Beth (plus some other students) some of my favorite places. We ate palaczintas (similar to crepes) and then went up to castle hill and walked around. I got some sun and was able to talk to my dear college friends and see what was going on in their lives after graduation. These pictures are of Matt and I and Joel and I from Castle hill, overlooking the Danube River.HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222667373196829014.post-48870307025245427372008-06-07T10:54:00.000-07:002008-06-07T11:11:23.320-07:00High School Play<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyZ9OJzr-JlAqQe_oLbndhN5VKv_t8DGVAYR5F-htnuY2WvcsjTg0GcuFqiFkw6xc64pmtMmBhjfQSs7ZUuhErfQuZINh6sf-PwTxMGnxFNajAhl9_jcQyoXYZgupYVuUMsEfuUeW2MV79/s1600-h/IMG_1806.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyZ9OJzr-JlAqQe_oLbndhN5VKv_t8DGVAYR5F-htnuY2WvcsjTg0GcuFqiFkw6xc64pmtMmBhjfQSs7ZUuhErfQuZINh6sf-PwTxMGnxFNajAhl9_jcQyoXYZgupYVuUMsEfuUeW2MV79/s320/IMG_1806.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209202842700269154" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOFMLuC0A9ZlNDv6SAC3x8CnuZAUA5_GWJdICcH1ytUQeLrphqEhzMSGoKUqL3JQT7RA6lK5u5QH0N-x4ROPB2LhmU7EWX1_6_HLZrdt6BSEioyGQ0OfoPx6rpkIblN0nle9Aq4q0WWWdl/s1600-h/IMG_1810.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOFMLuC0A9ZlNDv6SAC3x8CnuZAUA5_GWJdICcH1ytUQeLrphqEhzMSGoKUqL3JQT7RA6lK5u5QH0N-x4ROPB2LhmU7EWX1_6_HLZrdt6BSEioyGQ0OfoPx6rpkIblN0nle9Aq4q0WWWdl/s320/IMG_1810.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209202851026824530" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZav26uk7i_wf5Ej_MEwA3Feat8srR9FrJIn-aCI9QY_sd_uVsLlkXsnh8NIPJlFQMEvvb_atIswEsJjSDf1Sj-i4xbusj933-1fO3ZJqzDGBTil8LtxNffIMm9XszhK3_u3ixxMkMG4PW/s1600-h/IMG_1809.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZav26uk7i_wf5Ej_MEwA3Feat8srR9FrJIn-aCI9QY_sd_uVsLlkXsnh8NIPJlFQMEvvb_atIswEsJjSDf1Sj-i4xbusj933-1fO3ZJqzDGBTil8LtxNffIMm9XszhK3_u3ixxMkMG4PW/s320/IMG_1809.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209202858465067458" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq4xEKtSOil4WRxrrFm5DDcPlaQXVDFOOi7CrXg-XlXkBlzaD6zqI-81uxsU46kGQkdLRzRsvql2hgAe_mv_In1J2CJ5kI9MUsMwHJFnaI6DqDmCf-PDR9mdBDY9pnH17IVNijaJnXwJwO/s1600-h/IMG_1808.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq4xEKtSOil4WRxrrFm5DDcPlaQXVDFOOi7CrXg-XlXkBlzaD6zqI-81uxsU46kGQkdLRzRsvql2hgAe_mv_In1J2CJ5kI9MUsMwHJFnaI6DqDmCf-PDR9mdBDY9pnH17IVNijaJnXwJwO/s320/IMG_1808.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209202863637455106" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM3DIqrLS9cumFe-P8-EJ_iSa37w9VS6dQvCPxLthxC1Rw0sVOUMy3KOo34kgx-nsfy_eldfEA6izDgTaiMAoJgPL-2wxhfDgtLgeEb3uXGbSWokgmbNBgNBXerUhlGZCq1xI4DnaV3HWL/s1600-h/IMG_1807.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM3DIqrLS9cumFe-P8-EJ_iSa37w9VS6dQvCPxLthxC1Rw0sVOUMy3KOo34kgx-nsfy_eldfEA6izDgTaiMAoJgPL-2wxhfDgtLgeEb3uXGbSWokgmbNBgNBXerUhlGZCq1xI4DnaV3HWL/s320/IMG_1807.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209202868213106818" border="0" /></a><br />These pictures are from the day of the Spring Play at ICSB. It was quite funny and the kids did a great job.HWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07237782856962130785noreply@blogger.com0
